About Edward Charles Interiors

Wing chair and matching footstool

History

The company was born when Grahame started up his own upholstery workshop 'GEM Upholstery' in 1971 at the tender age of 19. He had become an apprentice to his uncle when he left school but soon decided to take the plunge and go it alone. Fast forward over 40 years and Grahame now has a great team working with him. We are a firm believer of ensuring the trade is passed down to the younger generations. Grahame's son and business partner Jeff has worked at the firm since leaving school. Two of our upholsterers started work with the firm upon leaving school and they are still ‘on the bench’ today – over 15 years later. We also have highly skilled seamstresses with vast experience in the trade.

Show Room

Although our workshop is vital (it is after all where all the hard work takes place producing the perfect chairs and sofas for our customers), we also know that when it comes to choosing a sofa or chair it is so important to be able to see it up close, sit in it and feel the fabrics before you make any decisions. We are delighted to say that this can all be done at our beautiful show room in the stunning village of Long Melford, Suffolk which was opened in 2014 and is run by Grahame and his two daughers Becky and Laura. We named the shop 'Edward Charles Interiors' after Jeffrey, Becky and Laura's two grandfathers.  And we have named most of our chair and sofa designs after the grandchildren in the family - so everybody is involved and it truly is a family business.

Why not come along and visit our show room, and whilst you are in the area take in some of the other delights that Long Melford has to offer such as historic buildings, antiques, shopping, excellent restaurants and fine hotels.
